Nemesia residence

est. 1976

“Rooted in individuality, blooming in unity.”

“Gewortel in individualiteit, blom ons in eenheid.”

“Sizinze kubuqu, sityatyambile kumanyano.”

In 2025, Nemesia is a vibrant and empowering home where every woman is celebrated for her unique voice, nurtured through meaningful connections, and encouraged to chase her dreams boldly.

We envision a residence where:

  • Individuality is honoured — each resident feels seen, heard, and valued for who she is.
  • Unity flourishes — we stand together as a sisterhood, fostering belonging and pride in our collective identity.
  • Respect defines our interactions — we create a culture of integrity, accountability, and mutual appreciation.
  • Compassion leads our hearts — we support one another with empathy and kindness, especially in times of need.
  • Dreams take flight — we believe in the power of ambition and empower each other to break boundaries, strive for excellence, and grow beyond expectation.

Together, we cultivate a legacy of strong, supportive, and visionary women — shaping the future from the heart of Stellenbosch.

our motto

Non Ducimur, Ducimus

.

We are not led, we lead

.

Each Nemesian has a chance to be ambitious and aspire to do anything and be anyone they choose to be! Dream big!

In Nemesia, respect means showing love to each Nemesian living in our shared space. It means respecting & taking care of our shared spaces in res. It means being appreciative and kind to our wonderful cleaning staff. Respect means listening, caring and loving.

Umanyano translates to unity. Nemesia is a space for everyone. Unity can transform a group of individuals into a bonded unit. A bonded unit is stronger and more effective than standing alone. Combining all our ideas, skills, personalities and dreams can create something truly remarkable. Togetherness & inclusivity.

Individuality gives each Nemesian a sense of self-worth and belonging. Nemesia offers opportunities that encourage personal growth and allows each of us to embrace our authentic selfs. Nemesia allows for each Nemesian to be fully and uniquely themselves. Nemesia embraces our incredible diversity in all aspects.

Barmhartigheid translates to compassion. Compassion is seen in Nemesia when we support each other in everything we do. Compassion is selfless love and care for each person. Compassion makes Nemesia a home.

A sneak peak into our world

Nemesia was founded in 1976, alongside its sister residence Erica (1975) and Serruria (1977). Nemesia was founded in 1976 and has proudly stood as a home away from home for generations of women at Stellenbosch University. While much of our early history remains unwritten, Nemesia has grown into a vibrant and diverse community grounded in the values of individuality, unity, respect, compassion, and dream. Over the decades, it has become more than just a residence — it’s a space where young women are empowered to lead, grow, and form lifelong friendships. As we honour our past, we continue to build a future rooted in sisterhood, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Nemesia.

Nemesia has been home to incredible women since its founding in 1976, and we know its history lives in the hearts of those who called it theirs. We’re inviting all former Nemesians to share your memories, photos, and stories from your time in the residence. Whether it’s a moment of laughter in the corridors, a lasting friendship, or a tradition you helped shape — we’d love to hear it. Your stories will help us honour our past and inspire future generations of Nemesians.

Nemesia cherishes its alumni and the lifelong sisterhood formed within our walls. We encourage all past residents to stay connected with us through our official LinkedIn and Facebook pages, where we share memories, updates, and opportunities to reconnect. As we look forward to Homecoming, we warmly invite you to visit the residence, reach out to us, and continue being part of the Nemesia journey. Whether through your time, stories, or contributions, your support means the world — and if you’d like to donate, we would be deeply grateful. Once a Nemesian, always a Nemesian.

The Three Sisters Bursary Fund is a powerful expression of solidarity and support among the three sister residences. This fund is dedicated to raising financial assistance for disadvantaged yet academically deserving undergraduate students residing in one of the three sisters. In 2025, we’re lacing up our running shoes for a purpose — through the final road races in the Western Cape, we’ll be fundraising to support this life-changing cause. The bursary aims to ease the financial burden by covering the full cost of tuition, accommodation, meals, and study materials. We’ll be sharing more information soon, including a link to donate and details on how you can get involved with the running. Every step we take brings us closer to ensuring that all students, regardless of circumstance, have the opportunity to thrive.
